How To Boost Your Immune System Even If You are Over 65

As you well knew the coronavirus pandemic has put the world at a standstill. It has been growing in intensity since at least mid-march and is projected to soon reach a fever pitch. The virus affects people of all age groups, but it's hardly a secret that the aged are the worst hit. Most of the people getting hospitalized as a result of the virus are old people, and when it comes to death rates the are the worst hit.

Why is this happening? Well, the novel coronavirus can easily be fought off by a strong and healthy immune system (some people never even get mild symptoms). But a weak immune system would find it difficult to defeat the virus. And, unfortunately, the immune system of older people, especially those above 65, are already weakened by age.

But all hope isn't lost. If you're in this category, there are still a few things you can do boost your immune system.

Eat Healthily

This is perhaps the most important tip. The food that you eat will contribute a lot to your body, and that includes your immune system. Healthy food have vitamins and minerals that will help boost your bodies defences, and the more healthy food you eat, the better your immune system becomes.

Some of these foods include vegetables and fruits. In fact, you should pay extra attention to  fruits rich in vitamin C like oranges. Asides that, you should try, as much as possible, to reduce your intake of sugar, fat and processed food.

Don't Rush, Don't Stress

If you're too stressed, your immune system can be negatively affected. When you're stressed, your body will release a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is what helps you deal with stressful situations. The hormone also limits nonessential bodily functions.

Generally, short term stress has no adverse effects on the body. But long term stress can arm the body terribly. They lower the response of the immune system and may even make you prone to infections.

So how can you reduce your stress levels? Easy. Learn how to say no, and engage in activities that you find enjoyable and rewarding. The more time you spend being happy, the more unlikely it is that you'll have to deal with chronic stress.

Get Active And Stay Active

When you get older, it may become insanely more difficult to engage in physically strenuous activities. But that doesn't mean you can't still exercise. Light exercises, coupled with regular physical activities will help build up your immune system and allow you to fight off viruses and infections easily.

As a senior who is above 65, keeping fit and maintaining a strong immunity should be a core priority especially in this period of the pandemic. You should try to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night if you're an older person. To sleep well, you should make sure that the lights are out and that the temperature is just right. Try not to take caffeine at night, and try not to take anything at least half an hour before bedtime.
