Celebrating International Women's Day

Women have bored the brunt of many years of oppression. Women before did not have the right to vote or hold government positions. They could not study and there were jobs only available for men. Women’s roles in society were deduced as homemakers and did not have equal opportunities as were given to men.

Across the world, we have gone a long way in the fight for equal rights among men and women. There is still a long way to go in terms of equal pay, objectification of women, the share of household responsibilities, and a lot more issues that have sprung up throughout the years. There are many systemic institutions that still remain patriarchal and put women at a level lower than men.

Fortunately, as mentioned, there are now several achievements of women that are recognized worldwide. Women have been taking bigger spaces in social, economic, cultural, and political spectrums. This is why International Women’s Day is celebrated every March 8. It started in 1911 and has since been a celebration of how far the women’s movement has gone and a reminder of what remains to be fought. The day also gives several platforms to accelerate gender parity concerns and raise funds for charities that are for the betterment of women in society.

There are three colors that have been symbolizing International Women’s Day since 1908: purple for justice and dignity; green for hope; and white for purity.

This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. There is a systemic problem in a place that makes it harder for women to move up the ranks alongside their male colleagues. These biases are sometimes deliberate; most of the time unconscious. We must be made aware of these biases so that we could actively choose to break them and not continue these sexist practices.

Any organization, institution, government, or individual can support International Women’s Day. This day belongs to both men and women who believe in equality and basic human rights.

Here at FlexiSpot, we value women’s contributions to society. Without women, we won’t have the scientists, artists, public servants, mathematicians, businessmen, farmers, workers, and teachers that make up our society. We owe our lives to women and their contributions to human civilization are equally impactful as the contributions of men.

We recognize at FlexiSpot that women now work more than merely stay at home. They are part of the workforce that makes the economy thriving and bustling. As with any other employee that makes up the backbone of our economy, they deserve the best work set-up. Comfort, convenience, and ergonomics are gifts for their hard work. They are able to work more efficiently and healthily, not experiencing physical discomfort or being exposed to the risk of developing chronic illnesses from prolonged sitting.
