6 Characteristics of a Good Leader in the Workplace

Accept challenges when they come your way because it can only make you a strong leader rather than succumbing to resistance, being stubborn or giving up easily.

3. A team of people follows someone who knows what he or she is doing and moves with confidence and grace. You are able to empower the members of the team if you are confident with your decisions and actions. They will become much more motivated to do their work if they see that you confidently give them instructions and lead the way for them. Your instructions and decisions must be firm and with conviction so that the team will trust your instincts and follow as you say. A good leader can practice delivering presentations and answering questions that may arise so that confidence is built.

4. A good leader is able to adjust to the times, meaning he or she is innovative and open to other methods and ways that have not been tried before. A good leader is creative and can devise these new and effective strategies for the team to produce an excellent output. You should not be closed off to new ideas, rather you should entertain them and be able to calculate risks or adjust accordingly to what works best for the team. One practice a leader wannabe can do is to think of different ways to solve a problem before deciding which is the best course of action to take.

5. A good leader understands what is happening on the ground and the experiences that the employees go through in accomplishing a project or a task. When he or she understands the process and the experience itself, he or she will be able to exercise empathy and understand where his or her team is coming from. It helps to have regular meetings that are more casual than the usual to know from the members themselves what challenges they have been encountering on the ground.


6. A good leader has focus and knows what to prioritize before moving on to another big project or ambition. He or she does not entertain distractions and knows what they need to do to achieve their objectives in the first place. A good leader will be able to manage the resources and the time of the team, knowing what they should be focusing their energies on. You can schedule hours of uninterrupted work before having the time to address smaller concerns. To be a good leader, you must arm yourself with the right tools.
