Learning New Things as an Adult

People are discouraged to learn new things when they are already at a certain age.

For example, 27-year-old Alex never learned to swim as a kid. They didn’t have a swimming pool at home and his parents couldn’t afford to take him to classes. Alex worked hard to finish his studies through scholarship programs. He eventually landed a high-paying job after a good educational background and an extensive experience. Now that Alex has the means, he has been contemplating on whether he should take swimming classes or not. For as long as he can remember, he has always been scared of the water and couldn’t have fun at the pool with his friends. He recently had a trip to Mexico and he couldn’t swim at the cenotes without a life vest. When he got back home to New York, he was really thinking about finally facing one of his biggest insecurities. The problem now is that if he takes swimming classes, he will be swimming with young kids. Maybe everyone would be looking at him, a lanky, male adult, who never learned how to swim.

But should age be a factor for Alex not to finally learn how to swim? Does it mean because he’s already 27 years old, he can’t learn how to swim ever in his life because he’s going to be classmates with young kids?

There was this similar episode of the popular 90s sitcom Friends where Ross just found out that Phoebe doesn’t know how to bike. She has never learned as a kid because she grew up in a broken family and they didn’t have the money to learn how to bike. Ross took the matter into his hands and offered to teach Phoebe how to bike. Even if her bike looked like it was for a seven-year-old girl, Phoebe, as carefree as she is, did not care that she was learning how to bike. She was of course shy to admit at first that she never learned how to bike but eventually found out how happy she was to bike. Well, technically, she was riding it with trainer wheels but we’re happy to see Phoebe happy.

So why would you give up this opportunity to be happy just because society tells you that you’re already too old to learn something? Isn’t age just a social construct? So many people have been defying this young and old concept and have proven to be successful in what they’re doing, even though they started late in life. Take Grandma Moses for example. She only started painting at the age of 80. Who would have thought her paintings would still be iconic when she started at an age that was so late in her life?

Do not care about what society thinks. The important thing is that you are having fun. To help you learn things at any point in your life, you must have the willpower and the fearlessness to let go and just enjoy. After all, you might just be doing this for fun and not expecting any monetary return from it?

You must be motivated, driven, focused, alert, and healthy if you want to learn something new. To have more time outside of work, you must be efficient and productive on every workday. We listed down items that you can fill your ergonomic workspace with to achieve all these we’ve been talking about.

You’d want to be able to use your desktop in different configurations or be able to move it at an angle that’s comfortable for you and won’t strain your neck. You can also take online classes where your video will be required. Having the flexibility to move around your monitor is a great function. FlexiSpot offers a single monitor mount or a dual monitor mount, one that is for a single desktop and another if using two screens. It’s much easier to do desktop work when one can configure two screens in different orientations.
