Most of the time, problem solving goes through a trial and error phase in order for you to find the right and perfect solution. 1. Visualize.

3. Have a diagram.

Sometimes, mentally visualizing a problem doesn’t work. For others, they need to draw a diagram in order to understand a problem of much complicated nature. Illustrate the predicament that you are in by making a diagram. Illustrate each step of the process that you need to go through so that you could pinpoint the areas where you still need to improve so that you could solve your problem, achieve your goals, and not find yourself in the same situation in the future.

4. Work in a backward direction.

Rely on your memory or documented evidence to solve a problem. Basically, you are going to backtrack everything that happened, all the events leading to the problem. In this way, you will hopefully discover what the root cause of your problem is. For instance, a robotics team does not know why their robot is not functioning the way they set it to operate. Since they can’t locate the problem, what they do is reverse engineer the robot that their competitor made. They will copy the steps that sound right and perfect for them while improving the other steps so that they are more advanced than their competitors.



5. Derive solutions from your past.

As they say, experience is the best teacher. You might have encountered the problem you are going through right now before. Think closely about how you were able to solve the same problem at that time. In one way or another, you will be able to establish a connection between your old problem and the problem that you are going through right now. You may tap into the same effective marketing tools that you used if you are struggling at the moment to sell a new product. There are many reports and analysis from the past that you could look into so that you could create an even better campaign than you did before.

6. Ask a third party to help out.

Someone who is not involved in the day-to-day may have valuable input and insights on how you could solve a problem. He or she may have the expertise that you need and can provide you with a collaborative way of solving a problem. The third-party must have no biases so that he or she can devise solutions that would favor all parties concerned. If you are struggling to find a solution to your problem with everyone in the team right now, having a third-party member might help get you out of the situation. It doesn’t hurt to ask, and of course, most of them offer services for a fee.



7. Ask your friends for help.

You need a brand new perspective when you’ve been stuck with a problem for too long. Ask your friends for what they think about it. They can help open your mind to a new solution or a new way of looking at your problem. Of course, they went through different life experiences and would have something to bring to the table to help you find a solution. When you ask friends out, ask people from different backgrounds so that you get a rich source of answers and options to solve your problem. You will still follow what you think is best but their thoughts and ideas can help you get to that solution.
